Host An Event

Host Local Shredding Events Near You

Hosting a shredding event is an excellent way for small businesses, government agencies, and other organizations to raise brand awareness and reward their current clients and community. VRC’s VitalShred® team can help you plan and host a successful shred event that will positively impact your business.

Identity Theft Protection

Give your customers and neighbors a secure way to destroy old tax returns, statements, and medical paperwork, the documents identity thieves look for.

Achieve Your ESG Goals

Hosting a shred event is an excellent way to meet your environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. Shredding events allow people to recycle their documents instead of throwing them away.

Build Employee Morale

Show your employees that you care about their privacy by sponsoring a Shred-A-Thon. This can go a long way in building trust and loyalty within your workforce.

Clear Your Own Backlog

An event is a natural deadline to purge your own filing room. Your boxes go into the same truck, destroyed under the same chain of custody.

What Is a Community Shredding Event?

A community shredding event is a scheduled, open-to-the-public session where a mobile shred truck parks at a host location — a bank, a city hall, a church parking lot — and destroys documents on the spot while participants watch.

Events are organized by a local business or government agency and are usually free or donation-based for attendees. Participants bring their papers, hand them over, and the material is shredded before they leave, then baled and sent to a paper mill for recycling.

How it Works

Work with our shred specialist

Our shredding event specialist works with you on scheduling the best day for your upcoming event. Typically, we have seen the most success on the weekends when people are free. We schedule our mobile shred trucks to come to your location on dates that work for you, saving you a lot of time in the planning process.

We help you develop a plan

Throughout the process, you will receive one-on-one consultation on some of the best ways to promote your paper shredding event. We can provide you with free graphics to use on your promotional material. Our team is always available during business hours to help answer any questions or concerns.

Decide if you want to host a free or private event

The type of event you want to host is up to you and your budget. If you want to collect donations, you can round up volunteers from your office to take donations from the participants. Our shred event specialist helps you organize the event to draw the largest turnout possible.

We set everything up

On the scheduled day, our mobile shredding truck is sent to your area to be there for the allotted time. Community members can bring in their piles of private papers and personal information to be shredded as they watch.

Your sensitive documents are shredded on-site

All your sensitive materials are shredded on-site. After each event, your shredded paper is sent to be recycled.

FAQs

Your Shred Events Questions, Answered.

Unsure if our shred events are right for your organization? Start with some of our frequently asked questions to see if we have the right file management service to fit your needs.

Usually. Public shred events are paid for by the host organization, so attendees typically bring documents at no charge, though some hosts collect donations for a local charity instead. Whether a specific event is free is set by its host.

Events are organized locally by the business or agency hosting them, and are usually promoted through that host’s own channels. Contact the VRC location nearest you to ask what’s scheduled in your area. If nothing is coming up soon, drop-off shredding lets you bring documents in on your own schedule.

Paper documents of any kind — tax returns, bank and credit card statements, medical paperwork, insurance records, pay stubs, old bills, and junk mail with your name on it. Bring them in boxes or bags you don’t mind leaving behind.

No. Industrial shred trucks handle them without difficulty, and documents can stay in file folders and hanging folders. Remove three-ring binders and anything that isn’t paper.

Most events set a per-person limit so everyone in line gets served — commonly a few boxes or bags per household. The host sets the limit. If you have more than that, a one-time purge is the better option.

Shredded particles are baled and sent to a paper mill for recycling, completing the chain of custody.

Public shred events are set up for paper. Hard drives, backup tapes, X-rays, and other media are handled through our hard drive destruction and IT asset disposition services, which follow NAID certification requirements and the same chain of custody.

A free public event draws foot traffic and builds goodwill in the community, which is why banks, credit unions, and municipalities usually choose it. A private event serves your employees or existing clients only, runs smaller, and is easier to staff.

Your shred event specialist will walk you through both and size the truck time to expected turnout.

Plan on several weeks so there’s time to reserve truck availability and promote the event. Weekend dates book first and fill fastest in spring, around tax season.

Cost depends on how long you need the truck on site, your location, and expected volume. Contact your nearest location for a quote.

Drop-off shredding lets you bring documents to a VRC location on your own schedule, and a one-time purge is the right fit for a backlog too large for an event.
