What Is IT Asset Disposition?

IT asset disposition, or ITAD, is the structured process for retiring outdated, obsolete, damaged, or no-longer-needed technology. It covers what happens after devices leave active use, including how data is destroyed, how assets are tracked, and how equipment is resold, recycled, or disposed of responsibly.

A complete IT asset disposition process typically includes three core elements:

ISO certifications provide another layer of assurance by showing that a provider maintains formal quality, security, or environmental management systems. In ITAD, these certifications matter because the process depends on consistency: assets must be received, tracked, processed, documented, and routed correctly every time.

ISO certifications should not replace ITAD-specific certifications, but they can strengthen confidence in the provider’s operating controls.
